From the U.S. Coast Guard to Sweet Success: Sweet Confections Cakes Named SBA 2026 Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year!

We have some incredibly sweet news to share, and it has nothing to do with sugar!

We are beyond thrilled, humbled, and proud to announce that Sweet Confections Cakes has been officially named the 2026 Eastern Pennsylvania Veteran-Owned Small Business Persons of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)!  

When co-owners, Darmayne and Willard A. Robertson Jr., received the phone call from the SBA, it brought tears of pure joy. To be recognized on such a grand scale is an honor we never expected, but one that reflects the heart, soul, and endless hours of hard work poured into this bakery every single day.

A Journey Built on Service and Adaptability

For those who know our story, Darmayne and Will’s partnership began long before they were whipping up our signature Pink Champagne Cake or crafting seamless fondant masterpieces. The duo actually met while serving their country in the U.S. Coast Guard.

When they traded in their military uniforms for baker's aprons, they brought that same level of discipline, grit, and dedication to the Central Pennsylvania community. Over the years, Sweet Confections Cakes has evolved from a custom bakery into a thriving Lower Paxton Township staple, complete with a commercial kitchen, a retail storefront, and a beautiful event space.  

When asked about the secret to their success, Darmayne credits a lesson learned well during their military service: adaptability.  

"The thing that kept us afloat was our adaptability. You have to stay on top of the trends and pivot when times get tough."

It Takes a Village (and an SBDC!)

This milestone wouldn't have been possible without an amazing support system. We owe a massive thank you to Martin Brill (coordinator for the Agricultural Center of Excellence) and the brilliant business consultants at both the Penn State and Kutztown Small Business Development Centers (SBDC). Their strategic guidance, financial mentorship, and belief in our vision helped us navigate long-term expansion and sustained growth.
